John Wendel, Meteorologist
John Wendel joined WCNC-TV in January 2001 as Meteorologist.
He has been forecasting weather for radio and TV stations for more than 25 years. John graduated from Northern Illinois University with a BS degree in Meteorology and a Speech Communication minor. He started in Wausau, WI. and then moved on to WEAU-TV in Eau Claire, WI. Seven years later John moved to WWMT-TV in Kalamazoo, MI., where he spent six years.
Looking for something warmer, John moved to Winston-Salem where he worked at WXII-TV for five years.
John says weather has always been a big part of his life. In second grade he would draw maps of the United States, add clouds, fronts and precipitation. Then, he would pretend he was a TV weather guy and tell all the kids in class that it would snow and they would have a snow day.
John's most memorable weather event was being in the eye of Hurricane Bertha. The winds were up to 90 mph. He was almost blown over and five minutes later the winds were almost calm.
John has been married to his wife Cathy for 24 years. They have two children. Stephanie is 19-years-old and likes to swim and attends UNC. Daniel is 15-years-old and also likes to swim.
Fishing, hiking and golf are some of John's favorite activities, but just spending time with his family is the most important thing in his life.
