This Charlotte holiday tradition provides new toys to children from distressed neighborhoods throughout Mecklenburg County.

In these challenging economic times, the need has doubled - compared to one year ago.

Now through Dec. 21, you can help make sure that no child is forgotten this holiday season. Bring a new, unwrapped toy to SouthPark Mall --- or to WCNC, located at 1001 Wood Ridge Center Drive, right off of Billy Graham Parkway.

CARMEL MIDDLE SCHOOL won the 2009 Magical Toy Drive school competition. Their students collected 1,136 new, unwrapped toys.

The winning school earned a Papa John's pizza party, which will take place Wednesday, Dec. 17.

NewsChannel 36 anchors Jennifer Copeland and Bobby Sisk and station mascot "Rainbow," along with "Sir Purr" from the Carolina Panthers will join the party to recognize the students' achievement and help them celebrate.

School competition guidelines:

1) Collect only new, unwrapped toys.

2) No going "door-to-door" to solicit donations.

3) The last day for acceptance of collected toys is Friday, Dec. 12

4) The Salvation Army will collect and count the toys to determine the winning school.

Final school totals:

Carmel Middle School - 1136

Smithfield Elementary School - 855

Community House Middle School - 777

James Martin Middle School - 477

Windsor Park Elementary School - 260

Nathaniel Alexander Elementary School - 91
