UNION COUNTY, N.C. -- The Carolina Waterfowl Rescue is grieving the loss of its animals after parts of its facilities caught fire Sunday.
"We are in shock and grieving the loss of our animals right now," the organization said in a Facebook post.
More than 30 birds were killed in the fire, NBC Charlotte's crew on the scene reports.
"We've never had anything like this before," said a volunteer from the Carolina Waterfowl Rescue. "It's definitely devastating."
Hembry Bridge Fire Department responded to a call of a structure fire on Poplin Road in Indian Trail Sunday night. The Carolina Waterfowl Rescue said on its Facebook page the fire originated from one of the outlets inside one of the barns.
Officials did not release the number of animals hurt or killed from the fire. Firefighters say crews and animal rescue staff did not sustain injuries from the fire.
The organization said it will need to repair damages and on top of that, a large number of birds will also need treatment for burns and smoke inhalation.
"All we can ask for is donations right now so that we can try to cover the cost of some of these things," Carolina Waterfowl Rescue said in a Facebook post.
The organization is also asking the public for an oxygen concentrator machines that they could borrow.
