CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Ready or not, the holiday season is right around the corner. Thanksgiving is just 36 days away and we’re only 67 days from Christmas.
The National Federation of Retailers expects holiday shopping to be up nearly 4-percent. So to keep up with the holiday rush, many retailers have announced they’ll be hiring thousands of additional employees.
Retail giant Macy's is hiring 90,000 workers; Target announced they’ll be hiring 70,000-- and that’s just naming a couple.
“My main priority is having that great customer service,” said Isabelle Reines, store manager for Forever 21 at the Carolina Place Mall in Pineville.
Belk, Macy's, Barnes & Noble, Forever 21 and Sunglass Hut were just a few or the more than 30 retailers there Tuesday who were participating in a job fair. Store representatives were available through the mall to meet with job seekers.
“It's been really great. We got over 10 applications in the last hour-and-a-half,” said Reines.
But retail stores aren’t the only ones hiring. With online shopping also on the rise, Amazon announced they’ll be hiring 127,000 seasonal workers in 27 states; UPS is to hire 95,000; USPS up to 40,000 and FedEx looking to hire 50,000 workers with 1,000 of those positions right here in Charlotte.
“It’s an employee friendly environment and the wages are being pushed up by the economics of supply and demand,” said Vance Tiller, vice president of sales and development for Staff Masters, an agency which helps place many seasonal employees in the Charlotte area.
“We have a number of clients in distribution, logistics, warehousing, manufacturing, assembly, customer service,” said Tiller.
Tiller says 68-percent of seasonal or temporary jobs often turn into full-time roles.
To apply for a seasonal position, just head online or visit a Staff Masters location. For those interested in a retail position, another job fair is happening Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. at Northlake Mall.
