Matt Lauer spoke out for the first time in a statement on Thursday morning after being fired from NBC and the "Today" show.

"There are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused others by words and actions," said a statement from Lauer read on "Today."

2. Search for missing NC girl intensifying near her home

The desperate search for a missing girl from southeastern North Carolina intensified Thursday.

3-year-old Mariah Woods was first reported missing from her Jacksonville home on Monday. Early Thursday morning, FBI Charlotte tweeted out a plea for anyone who had contact with the family on Sunday or Monday to call the Onslow County Sheriff's Office.

3. Infant killed in north Charlotte wasn't properly restrained, police say

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are investigating after a 14-month-old girl died after a crash in north Charlotte Wednesday morning.

Investigators determined that the child’s safety seat was not being used properly and she was not properly restrained. Police believe the misuse of the car seat was a contributing factor in her death.

4. Glitch leads to thousands of scheduled American flights without pilots

A glitch within a schedule system has left thousands of American Airlines flights without pilots assigned to them during the holiday time, read a post titled "Holiday Scheduling Failure" on the Allied Pilots Association site.

Up to 15,000 flights are in jeopardy of being cancelled between December 17 to December 31.

5. Tree lighting at Trade and Tryon tonight

The holidays are in full swing in the Queen City. The lighting of the Christmas tree at Trade and Tryon takes place tonight. The ceremony and celebrations start around 5:30 p.m. There will be live music, entertainment and photos with Santa.
