CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police announced on Thursday that officers will soon be carrying Narcan, sources tell NBC Charlotte.

Narcan is used in the event of an opioid overdose and is administered as a nasal spray to save people who are overdosing.

Sources tell NBC Charlotte that the department will begin training detectives in specialized drug units on how to use Narcan.
