CMPD to hold recruitment at NC military base

CMPD is making the 250-mile trip to Jacksonville, N.C., to hold a recruiting event at a military base.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- On Wednesday, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is making the 250-mile trip to Jacksonville, N.C., for its first hiring event at a military base for the month of April.

The department is participating in a career fair on Wednesday and conducting a writing test for qualified applicants on Thursday at Camp Lejeune.

“We spend a lot of time and effort trying to find the right military folks that we think would be a good fit for Charlotte,” says CMPD Captain Dave Johnson. Johnson is in charge of recruitment and training at CMPD.

CMPD is trying to fill roughly 170 open positions across several departments, including patrol and investigations.

Johnson says military bases often provide strong potential hires.

“They are physically fit. They have leadership training,” says Johnson. “They’ve got to already have a commitment and a desire to serve their community so all that translates very well into law-enforcement work.”

The captain says finding qualified applicants can be difficult: 95 percent of the people who do apply are disqualified.

“This is not an easy job to get so there’s a lot more rejection then there is a celebration. But we’re hopeful. Applications are up. Things are heading in the right direction,” says Johnson.

CMPD will participate in a career expo at Fort Bragg on April 25.
