Kannapolis principal honored for helping military families

A Kannapolis School Systems Principal was awarded the Employer Support of The Guard and Reserve 'Patriot' award for her support of military families that work in her school.

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. -- A Kannapolis School Systems Principal was awarded the Employer Support of The Guard and Reserve 'Patriot' award Thursday during a surprise award presentation inside the administration building.

Dr. Mandi Campell was recognized for her support of military families that work in her school including her assistant principal, Dr. Lyndsey Pelusi.

"It's the right thing to do." said Campbell after receiving her award. "Dr. Pelusi, or Lyndsey is very much worth it. It's honestly been an honor to be able to be there to support her."

If you ask Pelusi, a military spouse, and mother of a 10-month-old little girl, how many deployments has she endured-- she will tell you she is on her second. Her husband, Army Captain Matt Pelusi is serving today somewhere in Southwest Asia.

Matt has been out of the country since last October and won't be back home until this fall.

She nominated her boss for helping her through every challenge that comes with being a single parent-- from doctor's appointments and other needs.

"She's essentially here to take care of me because that's what she does every day." said Pelusi, who serves as assistant principal under Campbell.

"She has just gone above and beyond to be understanding if I have to be off for doctor appointments for my child. She has babysat for me so I can get a break since I don't have family in town to help me while my husband is gone."

"Any support that's given is definitely appreciated." added Keven Spalding, area chairperson with the ESGR.

Though not required by law, many employers voluntarily assist guard and reserve spouses, who often share the challenges of military service. Patriot Awards are given to individual supervisors and are nominated by contacting the ESGR State Committee in each state.
