LANCASTER, S.C. -- A 3-year-old boy is safe and with relatives after he was abducted and his mother shot, the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office says.

Authorities say Antonio Demarcus Cunningham, 29, and the boy's mother, who are involved in a relationship, got into an altercation Monday night; Cunningham allegedly wouldn't let the mother leave the house, but she was able to escape without her son.

The Sheriff's Office says Cunningham fired a shot at the woman as she fled, striking her. The woman returned to the home to retrieve her son, but again, Cunningham wouldn't let the woman leave, officials say.

That's when the woman fled the home a second time and ran to a neighbor's house to call 911.

Deputies were dispatched to the home on Woodland Drive and found Cunningham and the child were not there; an Amber Alert was issued, and a crisis negotiator made contact with Cunningham and was able to make arrangements for the child to be dropped off.

The child was retrieved unharmed and is with relatives.

Cunningham was arrested after a brief foot chase with deputies; charges are forthcoming.

The mother is receiving medical treatment; authorities say her injuries are not life-threatening.
