CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police has made an arrest in an Epicentre parking deck attack that went viral after violent protests broke out in uptown last week.
Antonio Gatewood, 22, has been charged with common law robbery, assault inflicting serious bodily injury, false imprisonment, and ethnic intimidation. He is currently in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sherrif's Office.
According to CMPD, the assault happened in the 200 block of East Trade Street and was captured on video, which has been obtained by detectives. Police say detectives located and interviewed the victim in the assault.
Police say the assault happened at around 10 p.m. Wednesday night when protests in uptown erupted in violent riots. The video of the attack begins with the victim, a white male in light-colored pants and short brown hair, on one knee at the entrance of the parking deck. Approximately 10 male suspects chase the man into the parking deck and proceed to hit and kick him before pulling off his pants as they assault him.
Investigators have compared video of the attack to surveillance video taken during looting at CVS in the Epicentre and have determined that some of the individuals involved in the attack may have been present. Detectives are also asking for help identifying these individuals so that they may be questioned in the case.Police say the video of the incident is not going to be released to the public.Anyone with information about the assault, the looting or the identity of any of the individuals is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
