MORGANTON, N.C. -- A Morganton man will spend 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to the statutory rape of a 14-year-old girl Monday.
Pasqual Mendez, 24, was given an active prison term of 12 to 19 years. He is also required to register as a sex offender for a period of 30 years.
Officers initially responded to a call in May 2016 in regards to an assault. The victim was found crying in the back yard and told officers the defendant hit her and shoved her down because she didn't cook dinner.
Mendez allegedly told officers he and the girl were married and that he had purchased the teen from Guatemala six months earlier.
After further investigation, the victim told officials that her mother and Mendez had set up the relationship. She said she met him for the first time when she arrived at the Charlotte airport.
The North Carolina courts say the victim's life consisted of cooking, cleaning and being forced into doing sexual activity with Mendez everyday. A medical examination also revealed that she was pregnant.
The victim is currently in custody of the Burke County Department of Social Services. She has no known family in the area.
