CHARLOTTE, NC (WCNC) - A community continues to mourn and search for answers after someone shot and killed a young woman in the middle of Charlotte's popular Plaza Midwood early Saturday.

26-year-old Katherine Jones was walking home from a night out in Plaza Midwood when she was shot and killed.

Police arrived around 2:45am Saturday and found Jones dead in the driveway of a business on The Plaza.

“It’s awful, you never think it’ll happen in your neighborhood but here we are,” said Lepton Haigler, who lives nearby.

Haigler says the area is usually safe.

“Around the holidays we’ve had a few breaks ins but were pretty insulated with where we live,” he said. “This is scary, it really hits home.”

The Plaza area is usually busy with pedestrian traffic. Most crimes in the area are non-violent.

“It’s pretty scary living here nothing like that has really happened like that so to have something happen so close to home its frightening,” said neighbor Grant Bunch.

“I do know we did get an email from police about some burglaries that have happened in the area but no violent crimes or anything that I know of. There’s actually a really big police presence that comes up and down the street all the time so I’ve never felt unsafe at all.”

On Sunday, residents told NBC Charlotte they love this neighborhood because it’s so open, friendly, and safe.

Or so they thought.

Police have no suspects in Katherine’s death…her killer still on the run.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a Homicide Unit Detective, or crime stoppers at 704-334-1600.
