HARMONY, N.C. -- A registered sex offender was arrested Tuesday after accompanying his girlfriend onto school property to register her child for class.

Officials were alerted by the Harmony Elementary School's campus resource officer when Justin Fordyce came to the school with his girlfriend and her child.

Fordyce is a registered sex offender from Maryland who had just registered in Iredell County the same day he stepped onto school property.

The school's principal told police that he noticed Fordyce attempting to pick up his girlfriend's child the same afternoon. He confronted him about being on school property and Fordyce admitted he knew he was not supposed to be there and left immediately.

Since Fordyce recently moved to North Carolina and other states have different sex offender laws than North Carolina, the deputy on the case contacted Maryland authorities to see if Fordyce was banned from schools there as well. Maryland officials told the deputy the was banned from being on school property in Maryland as well.

Fordyce was located and arrested Tuesday. He was transported to the Magistrate Chambers with a $10,000 bond.
