Suspect in shooting, kidnapping in custody; victim found in Catawba County

Deputies said Alexa Cruz was found safe, and Derek Moser turned himself into police around 11:45 p.m Friday night.

NEWTON, N.C. — Deputies were looking for a man they said shot one person and kidnapped another in Catawba County Friday afternoon.

Investigators said Derek Moser, 27, was on the run after the incident at 1525 Pinebark Court. That's in the area of Fairway Drive and Orchard Street.

Moser kidnapped Alexa Cruz,22, and took off in a 2006 Buick Rendezvous with N.C. license plate EKX-1904. Investigators said they knew each other.

Deputies said Cruz was found safe, and Moser turned himself into police around 11:45 p.m Friday night.

Moser was considered armed and dangerous. He will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, 2nd degree kidnapping, and larceny of a motor vehicle.

Moser is under a $145,000 bond in the Catawba County Detention Center. 

The victim of the shooting, Armando Jimenez, 29, was treated and released from the hospital.
