UNION COUNTY, N.C. -- Law enforcement and school officials have reached out to parents of a local middle school following a potential social media threat made against the school.

The Union County Sheriff's Office said Friday morning they're investigating a post circulating on social media concerning threatening language made toward Porter Ridge Middle School.

"We have NO reason to believe these comments represent a credible threat, but rest assured, we take all of these matters seriously and will make every effort to ensure all school campuses remain safe," the Union County Sheriff's Office said.

Porter Ridge Middle School Principal Dr. Patience contacted parents Friday morning in regards to the potential threat. He said officials were able to identify the person who made the post and the message is not credible.

The school will continue to have additional officers present Friday.

"Any student involved will be disciplined according to the code of conduct and possibly face charges," Patience said.

The threat comes after at least 20 other threats have been made in Charlotte area schools.

In the two weeks since a gunman killed 17 students and staff members inside a Florida high school and injured many more, law enforcement agencies across the nation and here in the Carolinas have been inundated with school threats.

NBC Charlotte counted at least 20 threats across the Charlotte viewing area since Valentine’s Day. In the past 24 hours, CMPD responded to at least four threats of violence at local schools.
