Drivers being targeted along Charlotte interstates

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A string of disturbing incidents on Charlotte interstates has motorists concerned for their safety.

On Tuesday, Lori Blythe was heading northbound on I-85 a few miles before Sugar Creek Road when out of nowhere an object struck the sunroof on top of her car.

“It was like BAM!” Blythe said. “It felt like a bomb going off on the top of my car.”

All Blythe knows is some kind of object landed on top her car shattering the sunroof. By the time she pulled off the highway, there was no evidence left behind besides broken glass.

Just last week on I-485, an 18-wheeler was hit by something thrown at the windshield. Days before that incident, someone fired a bullet into a car on I-85, striking the driver in the face. Last spring on the same stretch of I-85, three drivers were targeted in three days.

“It hit the windshield and really shocked me,” one driver described. “I almost wrecked on the highway.”

CMPD isn’t sure whether these incidents are connected, or isolated.

“I don’t know what’s more scary, knowing that they are connected or that there’s more than one bonehead out there,” CMPD spokesman Rob Tufano said.

Police are asking for the public’s help to keep each other safe.

“If you ever see somebody over a bridge, an overpass with an object that they seem to be dropping, you have to call 9-1-1,” Tufano said.
