Some schools remain closed to due weather conditions

"The decision is made for the better good of all students and the safety for all students," said Caldwell County Schools spokeswoman Libby Brown.

LENOIR, N.C.-- School districts in the Charlotte region announced they'll remain closed Friday due to concerns of icy road conditions.

School inclement weather closures, in general, prompt parents to question or even criticize the decisions on social media.

Caldwell County Schools are among the closures, and spokeswoman Libby Brown said it's partly based on road assessments.

She said about three to four workers are assigned a quadrant in the geographically large county to drive and assess the safety of the roads.

"Some of those roads are still treacherous and ice-covered," Brown said. "They haven't been plowed."

The conditions make it even more tough for teen drivers; for many, it's their first time driving on icy roads.

"The decision is made for the better good of all students and the safety for all students," Brown said.

Other school systems like in Gaston County rely mainly on police to update administrators on road conditions.

While it may be the safe decision, it will present scheduling challenges down the road.

Friday will mark Caldwell County's fourth inclement weather day, which means administrators now have a much smaller window to fit in as many school hours as they can to meet state requirements.

State law forbids the school year from going past June 8, 2018.

"We try to be as creative and innovative as possible in using those days for snow days," Brown said. "But we just don't have a lot of options."

Caldwell and Gaston Counties plan to open school Monday as a weather make-up day.
