CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Crews have begun shutting down roads ahead of Saturday's Saint Patrick's Day parade in uptown Charlotte.

Thousands of people are expected to attend the festivities which start at 10 a.m.

The parade will start at East 9th and North Tryon Street before making its way down to East 3rd and South Caldwell Street.

On Friday night, many people, including Ted Kipp, celebrated the holiday at pubs throughout Uptown.

"I'm Irish-Italian," Kipp said. "Just enjoying my heritage."

Highway Patrol in Mecklenburg County said it will not be doing DWI checkpoints over the weekend as troopers plan to roam the highways instead of sticking to one spot.
