Award-winning journalist and Alzheimer’s advocate, Maria Shriver traveled the world with National Geographic Explorer in hopes of uncovering the secret to living a healthier, happier and much longer life.
Shriver discussed her journey through places called the "Blue Zones"; It's a term coined by author Dan Buettner to describe the spots where the population live longer than any other and have the highest quality of life.
The five zones are:
- Sardinia, Italy
- The islands of Okinawa, Japan
- Loma Linda, California
- Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica
- Icaria, Greece
Although in different corners of the world, Shriver said there are distinctive traits these areas share.
“Mainly vegetarian. Most of the protein they’re getting is coming from beans, a lot of creativity in the recipes which I found super interesting they’re also all moving,” Shriver said.
She also said Blue Zone populations have a strong focus on family and community as well as having a spiritual component to their lives.
