ROCK HILL, S.C. -- South Carolina’s Poison and Control Center has issued a caffeine use warning after a high school student died.
The coroner says the teen drank an excessive amount of caffeine.
When 16-year-old Sean Cripe died last month, the coroner says he drank a large Mountain Dew, latte and an energy drink within two hours.
“This amount of caffeine, the way it was ingested can have dire consequences,” said Richland County Coroner Gary Watts.
According to our estimates, Cripe could’ve drank anywhere between 300 and 750 mg of caffeine.
This week’s warning from the SC Poison and Control Center says that’s way too much for an adult let alone a teenager.
“Children and adolescents really shouldn't be drinking caffeine at all,” said Dr. Colin Kane. “The American academy of pediatrics recommends no caffeine for children and adolescents.”
The FDA recommends adults consume no more than 400 mg of caffeine per day. That averages to about five cups of coffee.
“In moderation, caffeine is not harmful, but if you take an excessive amount, caffeine can be dangerous,” said Dr. Colin Kane.
Caffeine is a stimulant. It can increase your blood pressure and heart rate or even worse -- it can kill you.
Just like it did 16-year-old Sean Cripe.
