CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- This week, Charlotte was ranked 47 out of America's 50 fittest cities, according to a new study released by the American College of Sports Medicine and the Anthem Foundation.

A new initiative is working to get the Queen City where she belongs, on top of that list.

In 2014, the Charlotte Chamber formed an initiative called "Healy Charlotte." Now, they're launching a new program called "Walking Wednesdays," where citizens are encouraged to add at least 30 minutes of walking every Wednesday.

"Walking Wednesdays is a great way to boost physical activity in the community of Charlotte," Healthy Charlotte leader Celia Thompson said.

So you may be asking yourself, "is there a magic number," when it comes to the number of steps you should be taking?

Thompson says, "The original study was 10,000 steps, but now it has broadened to 15, but really it's just about taking the first step."

That part is easy! The fitness enthusiast suggests adding these three steps to your daily routine:

  1. Walk on your lunch break
  2. Walk around the office
  3. Always take the stairs

And while you're at it, grab a friend! That's what Emily Stacks did.

"We formed a walking group," said the Charlotte Chamber worker. "On our lunch break, we bring a pair of tennis shoes, get out and about around the city and really move."

If you don't have a way to track your steps, they're helping with that, too! The Chamber is partnering with the YMCA of Greater Charlotte. All you need is a smart phone. In the Apple App Store or on Google Play, search for YMCA of Greater Charlotte WTN (Workout Tracking Network).
