1 dead after crash in south Charlotte, driver charged with DWI

Charlotte- Mecklenburg Police have charged a man in connection to a single-car crash in south Charlotte early Sunday that left one woman dead.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police arrested a man suspected of driving while intoxicated in a deadly crash in south Charlotte early Sunday morning.

According to police, the crash happened at around 1:20 a.m. in the 1900 block of Runnymede Lane near Barclay Downs Drive.

CMPD said the driver, identified as 29-year-old Matthew Michael Harvie, suffered minor injuries. The passenger, identified as 33-year-old Mary Stephens Brooks, was pronounced deceased at the scene by Medic.

Following a preliminary investigation, police say alcohol and speed were factors in the crash.

Harvie was driving eastbound on Runnymede Lane well above the 35 mph and ran off the roadway, according to police. The car traveled off the roadway and struck a large tree. The vehicle was split apart and continued on to strike three more trees before overturning.

Harvie was charged with felony death by vehicle, driving while impaired and reckless driving.
