GASTONIA, N.C. -- A 20-year-old man has been charged with DWI after a fatal crash killed one person in Gastonia Sunday night.

Gastonia Police and the local paramedic responded to a multiple-vehicle crash around 10 p.m. in the 3400 block of Robinwood Road.

Following an investigation, police say 58-year-old Steven Lewis Ward was traveling west on Robinwood Road when his vehicle was hit head-on by another car. Ward later died on the scene from his injuries.

The driver of the second vehicle, 20-year-old Clarence Gilbert Bailey III, was transported to Caromont Regional Medical Center with for treatment of not life-threatening injuries.

Bailey has been charged with felony death by motor vehicle, felony hit-and-run, driving while impaired, provisional driving while impaired, texting while driving, no opperator’s license, failure to register vehicle, possession of alcohol by a 20-year-old, consumption of an alcoholic beverage by a 20-year-old and careless and reckless driving.
