CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- One person has died after a multi-vehicle crash in southwest Charlotte on Friday night.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, the crash happened around 11:50 p.m. at Clanton Road and South Boulevard on the CATS LYNX Blue Line tracks.

Following a preliminary investigation, police say speed and reckless driving were contributing factors in the crash.

The crash involved three vehicles, a Dodge Nitro SXT, Hyundai Sonata and a Dodge Nitro Heat.

A passenger from the Dodge Nitro SXT, 65-year-old Paulette Lawrence, died at the scene. The driver, Monica Lawrence, was transported to CMC for treatment.

According to police, the driver of Hyundai Sonata, Kenitra Peterson was speeding on Clanton Road when the car struck the rear of the Dodge Nitro SXT. The vehicles traveled into the intersection, where the Dodge Nitro SXT hit the side of the Dodge Nitro Heat.

Both vehicles entered the Light Rail Tracks and overturned.

All three occupants, including two children, in the Hyundai Sonata were transported to CMC Main for treatment. The driver, Kenitra Peterson, 30, was transported for treatment of serious injuries.

Peterson's 10-year-old daughter was transported for treatment of serious injuries and her 5-year-old son was transported for life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the third car, a Dodge Nitro Heat, was treated for minor injures at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation. Charges against Kenitra Peterson are pending, according to police.
