Armed robberies targeting Charlotte businesses, restaurants

Monday was a violent night of armed robberies targeting popular chains in the Queen City.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Monday was a violent night of armed robberies targeting popular chains in the Queen City.

Police are investigating robberies that took place at McDonald’s, a Family Dollar, and a Bojangles', where shots were fired Monday night. The crimes all happened within two hours of each other.

The police reports show the McDonald’s was the first to be robbed at around 6:45 p.m. Monday night. A manager there says employees are afraid the suspects will come back.

“We’re still scared, we still don’t know,” said Nancy David, a manager at the McDonald’s on Beatties Ford Road.

David wasn’t there during the armed robbery but she described how the transaction was terrifying for her co-workers.

“(He) gave her the $2 for the McDouble, she took the $2, his $2 in cash," David said. "When the register opened that’s when he pulled the gun out."

David said the suspects took the register and then took off.

“Everyone is OK, thank God," she said. "No one was hurt in the process because our whole lobby was full of customers."

No shots were fired in that case. However, about an hour and a half later, a suspect opened fire during an armed robbery at Bojangles' on East Independence Boulevard.

Within a half hour of that, a Family Dollar was robbed at gunpoint on Nations Ford.

McDonald’s workers tell NBC Charlotte they’re afraid of a repeat.

“We don't know whether they were going to come again, or whether someone was going to come through the drive-thru window and get us,” David said.

When asked if any of the crimes are connected, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department only said the investigations are active and ongoing.

So far there are no arrests.

“Whoever they are, I hope you are all watching and I hope you get caught because that’s not cool,” David said.

Anyone with information on the robberies is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
