CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Police in west Charlotte are investigating after a man was shot and killed Monday night.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, officers responded to the 300 block of North Hoskins Road just after 7 p.m. Monday. When police arrived on the scene, investigators say they discovered a man inside a car suffering from a gunshot wound.

Police said the victim, identified as Cornell Lamarche Bridges, 32, was in the driver's seat after hitting a utility pole. Bridges was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

"I knew it didn't sound like no pistol or handgun. It sounded like something powerful and it really disturbed me," said John Horton. "That's what shocked me about it because someone lost their life."

According to police, Bridges' death is the 41st homicide of the year in Charlotte.
