CMPD releases description of man approaching children in southeast Charlotte

Police are investigating a recent incident involving a stranger approaching children and attempting to give them money.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- There are new, disturbing cases of stranger danger are coming to light.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is now warning of at least two cases of a suspicious man approaching children as they were walking to the bus stop.

NBC Charlotte previously talked to two boys who described in detail what happened to them on Hammett Street in the Cotswold neighborhood. On Friday, the driver of a white van offered money to the boys near a bus stop.

“I told him no and then we ran. I was just thinking over and over like is this guy armed or what’s he going to do to us?,” the nine-year-old boy previously told NBC Charlotte.

The bus arrived moments later and the boys say they told their bus driver and teacher what happened.

CMPD said the driver is described as a black male, appearing to be in his 30s and with dreadlocks.

Police said on Saturday, the same suspicious man drove around the neighborhood and made the same offer again. Now, police are warning neighbors to keep an eye out.

CMPD tells NBC Charlotte officers are now patrolling the neighborhood. Police urge parents to remind their children never to ride with strangers, teach them to call 911 and make sure you know their route to and from school.

The boys’ mom is thankful for how her sons reacted.

“I’m very proud of them,” she told NBC Charlotte previously.

Police say no crime has been committed, but they would like to identify the man. If you have any information about the case, call 911 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 immediately.
