Dad accused of pulling out gun at basketball game in NC

"I think it's ridiculous that someone would think it's OK to bring a gun to a sixth-grade basketball game."

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A weekend basketball tournament for middle and high school girls turned into chaos after an angry dad pulled a gun on another parent.

While it happened in Greensboro over the weekend, many of the Charlotte teams were competing when the incident happened.

That panic came at the end of what would have been a fun weekend for 14-year-old Ella Rising, her sister and their teammates.

"Right when you got in, you could tell something was off," Ella said.

Things went haywire when police say Damian Jones, the dad of a 6th-grade player, got into an argument with the father of another player and pulled out a gun in a threatening manner.

"All I remember was hearing coaches yelling, "he as a gun! He has a gun!' and everyone started rushing and pushing as far back into the building as possible," Ella said.

Ella and her sister were at the front of the building and didn't know what was going on.

"Everyone started running so I started running," she said. "It was simultaneously the slowest and fastest five minutes of my life. It was like a stampede."

They managed to get to a locker room in the back of the building with a group of other players and parents. They locked the door and stayed huddled until police came.

Ella and her family couldn't help but think about the recent mass shooting in Parkland, Fla.

"It's really sad my daughters knew what to do," said Ella's mother. "I'm grateful but I hate that. They shouldn’t have to know what to do."

People in the tournament were stunned that the fight broke out over a children's sporting event.

"I think it's ridiculous that someone would think it's OK to bring a gun to a sixth-grade basketball game," Ella said.

Police say Jones had a conceal-carry permit but was impaired at the time. He was charged with violating his conceal-carry permit and disorderly conduct.
