ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. -- An inmate who escaped from the Rowan County Detention Center is back in custody, according to deputies.

The Rowan County Sheriff's Office said 32-year-old Timothy Clarence Smith Jr. escaped from a second-story window of the detention center in Salisbury a little after 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

Smith was later arrested at an apartment complex on Gaskey Road in Salisbury. He was taken into custody after a brief foot chase, according to deputies.

Smith was awaiting trial for a murder allegation in 2016. Following Saturday night's escape, Smith is expected to face additional charges, deputies say.
