Five things you need to know Tuesday, April 24

1. Rain a factor in deadly Cleveland County wreck, troopers say

North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating after two people were killed in a crash early Tuesday in Cleveland County.

State troopers told NBC Charlotte that a man and woman were killed after they ran off the road and hit a tree on Whitaker Road in Mooresboro. Troopers said another driver was passing through the area and found the crashed vehicle around 4:30 a.m.

"I would say probably too fast for the conditions," said First Sergeant Josh Dowdle. "It was raining heavily at the time and just looking at the damage to the vehicle, they were probably traveling at a good speed. It's substantially damaged, almost folded in half."

2. President George H.W. Bush was hospitalized Monday

Former president George H.W. Bush was taken to a Houston hospital with an infection the day after attending the funeral for his wife of 73 years, according to a statement from his office Monday.

Bush, 93, was taken to Houston Methodist Hospital Sunday with an infection that had spread to his blood. He is "responding to treatments and appears to be recovering," Bush spokesman Jim McGrath said.

When asked about his recovery, McGrath said, "The 41st President wants to go to Maine this summer. He’s the most goal-oriented person on the planet, and I would not bet against him.”

3. Parents say offensive lyrics were played in music class

Parents want a local teacher punished after they said she played music with offensive lyrics in front of students. The incident allegedly happened at Washington Elementary School in Cleveland County.

"My nephews were singing it, and my niece said the teacher played it in class," said Melvin Clark.

Families said the song was "Oh! Susanna", and there was no need to read between the lines.

"And I'm going down, and I'm going to kill 500 (racial slur)," Clark said. Click here to continue reading.

4. Police searching for suspects who hit 4-year-old, father

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police continue to look for hit-and-run suspects who ran over a father and his four-year-old son.

It happened last week outside Harris Teeter at Blakeney Village. CMPD told NBC Charlotte one of the suspects was stealing beer. Police say the suspect stealing a case of beer hopped into a getaway car and hit 41-year-old Nate Green and his son as they sped off.

Green suffered several skull fractures and has since been in and out of the hospital due to swelling of the brain, severe pain and nausea. Anyone with information is asked to call CMPD at 704-334-1600.

5. Amazon may deliver to your car, wherever it's parked

I gave Amazon the keys to my car last week and it went pretty well.

Not that Amazon needed a lift (and the actual key was a digital one.) I was testing a new program, launching Tuesday, that lets Amazon drivers unlock a customer's vehicle via an app and leave their packages inside it, rather than on their doorstep. Think of it as Amazon turning your car into a locker, only you get to decide where the locker is located — and you can move it around.

It's a new addition to the Amazon Key program, which began in October, that allows Amazon drivers to open customers' front doors and leave packages inside.
