MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- A former Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer was found dead on a Mooresville golf course Thursday afternoon, police said.
Authorities confirmed that 40-year-old Michael Scott Bell's body was discovered at the Mooresville Golf Course on Wilson Avenue after 1 p.m. Bell's death is under investigation, but police say there is no sign of foul play at this time.
According to Mooresville Police, Bell last made contact with his family around 5 p.m. Wednesday. He was believed to be at risk due to recent health issues, officials said.
CMPD said Bell was employed with the department until December 16. CMPD confirmed to NBC Charlotte that Bell was the officer involved in the fatal shooting of Rodney Rodriguez Smith in northeast Charlotte last summer.
Mooresville Police released the following statement Thursday:
Personnel from Mooresville Police, Mooresville Fire-Rescue, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police and other area public safety agencies have concluded the search for the missing Mooresville resident, Michael Scott Bell. The outcome is not what we hoped but we thank all who assisted in the search or shared their concern for the responders and the Bell family. The investigation into the cause of his death is continuing.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police also released a statement following Bell's death:
It is with great sadness that we inform you of the death of former Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer Michael Scott Bell, 40. Bell was hired by the CMPD on September 14, 2009, and served as an officer until December 2016. He was last assigned to the University City Division.
Earlier this morning the Mooresville Police Department received a missing person call for service. Bell had last made contact with his family yesterday evening and they were concerned for his safety due to some recent health issues. Shortly before 1:00 p.m. this afternoon, officers located Bell deceased in Mooresville along his normal walking route. At this time the circumstances of his death are being investigated by the Mooresville Police department. Though the investigation is in its early stages, initial indicators are that medical factors may have been at play.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Bell family as they grieve the loss of their loved one.
