Local man turns to art to help overcome his challenges

Gaston County, N.C. -- A 20-year-old Gaston County man, who once was given just minutes to live, is overcoming his physical difficulties through woodworking.

Taylor Moore was born with a congenital heart defect, which his parents said they didn't know until a few months later.

"My husband came through the hall screaming, just screaming," Tabetha Moore recalled. "Taylor's eyes had rolled back in his head, and he had turned blue."

Their son had died, but paramedics shocked him back to life, but he only survived for a short time.

By the time he made it to the hospital, Taylor Moore had clinically died and been brought back to life twice in 20 minutes.

"The doctor came in and said, 'I can't guarantee you he'll live five minutes,'" Tabetha recalled.

Taylor persisted, and he will now be turning 21-years-old in August.

But being clinically dead multiple times led to new challenges, including Cerebral Palsy, Scoliosis and childhood seizures.

His brain does function. In fact, he graduated high school.

But, he can't get his words out and he requires a lot of physical therapy.

"[The physical therapy] still wasn't quite enough to keep him from contracting and his arms turning in," Tabetha said.

Taylor's father, Michael Moore, had an idea.

Moore is talented at woodworking so he cut and sanded some pieces for Taylor to use.

Those first few pieces turned into a burgeoning online business.

Taylor now helps make an assortment of decorative wooden pieces, cutting boards, crosses and coasters.

Taylor picks the colors of each piece. And with mom's help, he spreads on the board wood butter, a mixture designed to protect the surface.

"His eyes light up," Tabetha said. "[He's] so happy about it."

"Every time you see that smile, everything's worth it," Michael said. "It's worth it."

But any profits from the business could never match the surprising benefits.

"His hands are opening up more," Tabetha said. "His arms are coming out further from his body."
