CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A high school in west Charlotte is investigating after a gun was found inside a student's backpack.

According to Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology's principal Terra Kennedy, the school's staff responded to reports of a student possessing a gun.

Kennedy said the student in question was searched and a loaded gun was found inside the student's backpack.

Everyone was safe from the incident, Kennedy said.

Kennedy sent parents the following message:

This is Principal Terra Kennedy with an important message. The safety and well-being of students is a top priority for me at Phillip O. Berry. This morning we were made aware of a student who may have had a gun in their possession. The student was searched and the unloaded gun was found in the student’s backpack. No students or staff were ever threatened and everyone is safe. Please, talk with your children about bringing inappropriate items to school. If you have questions, please feel free to call the school.
