How crews plan to prep the roads ahead of possible winter storms

NCDOT crews along the I-40 corridor near Newton told NBC Charlotte they did not prep the roads in the foothills because of the rain and the questionable forecast.

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. -- NCDOT crews along the I-40 corridor near Newton told NBC Charlotte they did not prep the roads in the foothills because of the rain and the questionable forecast.

Crews say the salt and brine will not stick to the wet roads if it continues to rain outside.

The preparations are better suited for the folks up in the mountains, where roads have already been treated. In January 2018, NCDOT used 8,500 tons of salt, which costed over $654,000. Those salt numbers don't include the 1,200 tons of mix and 82,000 gallons of brine.

Depending on what happens, the unprepped roads could be a big driving hazard heading into Monday.

NBC Charlotte reached out to the Catawba County Sheriff's Office to ask about possible snow preparations and they said they have already been slammed with responding to nearby accidents.
