CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Hundreds of people are without power after a car slammed into a power pole.

The single-vehicle accident also injured its occupants and shut down a major road.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said a car with three people was speeding along East W.T. Harris Boulevard. When it lost control, hit a power line and overturned into some trees.

One person was ejected and suffered serious injuries.

Eldon Kennedy said drivers frequently go over the speed limit along this road.

"Speed was definitely a factor," Kennedy said. "A 35-mile per hour road, and a car being turned and flipped like that, speed's the only thing I can think of."

Harris Boulevard was shut down southbound between Idlewild Road and Waterford Creek Lane for several hours.
