CHARLOTTE, N.C. – There is a new cautionary tale about who you make friends with on social media.
NBC Charlotte is learning a man is being blackmailed over a nude video he shared with a stranger who he met on Facebook.
The victim says it happened just a few days ago. Now, the suspect is demanding he pay $5,000 or they will spread the video all over the place.
“A horrible experience” says the victim, who asked NBC Charlotte to hide his face.
It started with a Facebook conversation that set off a social media nightmare, according to the victim. He says the suspect sent him a friend request on Facebook on Sunday.
“He said, ‘Hello, I’m lonely I just moved here four months ago,’” says the victim.
The victim says he accepted the friend request with the person, who had a photograph of a woman as the profile picture.
A short time later, things escalated in a Skype video that followed. The 21-year-old man tells NBC Charlotte his new Facebook friend asked for nudity in the Skype video.
“(They) said, ‘I want to see your secret part,’” says the victim.
Then, the suspect asked for even more. The victim tells NBC Charlotte the suspect threatened to spread the video if he didn’t pay $5,000.
“He said, ‘I’m going to upload your naked video everywhere, I need money $5,000, if you don’t give me I will upload this video to the school, to your friends, to your family members,'” says the victim.
He’s now filed a police report and he’s also doing what he can to keep the video off the web. He says the nude video was uploaded to YouTube, but has been taken down. He also says Facebook tracked the suspect’s IP address to Africa.
Now, he’s got a message to other social media users.
“Don’t do it then, they can threaten you, they can ask for money,” he says. “I would have never done (it).”
The victim says he has since deleted his Skype account. The case remains under investigation.
