CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WCNC) - When Janet Jackson gave birth at 50, she made headlines as an older mom. A Charlotte woman actually had healthy twins at 49, but says it’s a juggling act balancing a full family and work at an older age.
16-month-old fraternal twins, Luna and Lucas, are always moving.
“We laugh every day,” says mom Patricia Snow, a leader in technology at Wells Fargo. She still can’t believe this is her world.
“It’s a miracle – I look at them every day and think 'how did we get this lucky that they’re this healthy?' There's so many things that could go wrong, and thank god they’re good.”
That’s because Patricia is 50 years old. She was 49 when she got pregnant.
“There was this fear that something could be wrong. Also, my family was worried about me health-wise carrying the babies.”
She and her husband, Ramon Lopez, married later in life. They got pregnant with their first child, Ruby, easily.
“We thought if we got pregnant with Ruby, it would be no issue getting pregnant again.”
She couldn’t have been more wrong.
She suffered two miscarriages, the couple did artificial insemination and IVF. “Every step of it takes time and then, before you know it, its five years later," she said.
Lopez remembers, “The doctor says this was the last one. Can’t do anymore because of age.”
Finally, after more than 6 years, Patricia was pregnant again, at 49.
