CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- State Senator Joel Ford (D--N.C.) announced his candidacy for Mayor of Charlotte Wednesday afternoon, according to a press release from his campaign team.

Ford also released a video on his new Facebook page, "Joel Ford for Mayor" to make the announcement.

Ford, who represents District 38 (Mecklenburg County), is currently serving his third term as state senate, according to the N.C. General Assembly's web page. He joins Charlotte City Councilwoman Vi Lyles, Democrat, among candidates who have formally announced their mayoral campaigns for 2017. Lyles announced her campaign for mayor in February.

Ford and Lyles will both be looking to challenge incumbent Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts, who has been in office since December 2015.
