Gastonia Nissan donates school supplies

Gastonia Nissan presented a pickup truck filled with school supplies to Gaston County Schools for students in need.

GASTONIA, N.C. -- Gastonia Nissan presented a pickup truck filled with school supplies to Gaston County Schools for students in need.

It's part of the dealership's "Road to a Better Community Driven by Gastonia Nissan" campaign. NBC Charlotte is a partner in the back-to-school supply drive called "Fill the Frontier."

Gaston County Schools social worker Whitney Hill was happy with the amount of collected supplies.

"I'm just really excited that I get to take these back to my students," Hill said.

Her students are among hundreds in the County who've started this school year without necessary supplies because their parents can't afford them.

"There's a huge need in the community that most people don't think about or realize because it's not been brought to the forefront," Gastonia Nissan's Jeff Viner said. "But the kids need these school supplies to succeed."

Gaston County Schools' Valerie Yatko said the supplies will help children continue to do their jobs.

"The important job of learning that they have to do," Yatko said. "I think it makes them feel good about themselves to have supplies."

Hill added donated school supplies are a year-round need.
