Officer fired weapon as suspect tried to flee and drove towards officers, police say

The State Bureau of Investigation and Pineville Police are investigating a crash following an attempted traffic stop that lead an officer to fire his service weapon in Pineville Sunday morning.

PINEVILLE, N.C. -- The State Bureau of Investigation and Pineville Police are investigating a crash following an attempted traffic stop that lead an officer to fire his service weapon in Pineville Sunday morning.

The incident happened on Pineville-Matthews Road around 5 a.m.

According to police, an officer was attempting to make a traffic stop for suspicion of impaired driving. Police say the driver didn't stop for the blue lights and sirens but tried to drive towards other officers trying to assist in the stop.

One officer fired his duty weapon as the driver steered towards him, police say.

The driver was not injured by the gunfire and continued down Pineville-Matthews Road when he turned onto Centrum Parkway and overturned the vehicle.

The driver was transported to CMC Main for treatment of injuries related to the crash.

Police say the suspect was driving on a revoked South Carolina license and appears to have been intoxicated.

The suspect's name and pending charges have not yet been released.

The incident remains under investigation.
