YORK COUNTY, S.C. -- We're still months away from the grand opening of Carolina Harbor, Carowind's new water park. It will be the largest water park in the Carolinas, and Wednesday, NBC Charlotte got a behind the scenes look at the construction.

The Carolina Harbor project will double the number of water slides at Carowinds, add another wave pool, and give patrons more dining options.

"We're expanding (the water park) by 40-percent. We're adding a new slide tower, new restaurant, new restroom, we're adding a new bar," said Carowinds Director of Maintenance Construction, Steve Jackson.

Jackson said Carolina Harbor is expected to be ready for inspections by May 1 next year.

"This is the largest water park expansion we've ever done at Carowinds, and I've been here for 30 years," said Jackson.

The metal framing of Blackbeard's Revenge is already taking shape. The six-story attraction will feature six water slides. A two acre family area will include Seaside Splashworks, a "spray ground", and Surf Club Harbor, a new wave pool.

"We set records in attendance last year and we're going to do it again in 2016," said Jackson.

As builders spend an estimated 280,000 hours total working on the project, the anticipation builds.
