Search narrows in summer kidnapping cases

There are major developments about the police manhunt after someone tried to kidnap joggers at gunpoint.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- There are major developments about the police manhunt after someone tried to kidnap joggers at gunpoint.

Two frightening crimes happened within an hour of each other last Fourth of July. The suspect pulled up in a vehicle demanding the victims get inside.

Now, NBC Charlotte obtained court documents revealing how police are narrowing down the search for the suspect. A search warrant shows police now have a big lead in the case.

One of the attempted kidnappings happened near the Whitewater Center, forcing it to close for hours.

“Scares me, I run a lot,” one jogger told NBC Charlotte at the time.

Police later recovered a stolen car used by the suspect, which had been set on fire. Now, NBC Charlotte has learned a man was arrested on other charges about a half a mile from the burned-out vehicle, according to court documents.

Documents show he matched the description of the suspect in the attempted kidnappings.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said they were looking for a Hispanic male in a tan Mercedes who pointed a gun at a woman and demanded she get in the car.

The second attempted kidnapping case happened near the Charlotte Premium Outlets.

“The cops came up and said, ‘run, get out of here,’” one woman told NBC Charlotte.

Now, NBC Charlotte is also learned police have tied evidence of the attempted kidnapping to the same man’s Facebook page, according to court documents.

Police say no one has been charged in those crimes, so NBC Charlotte is not releasing his name at this time. It remains an ongoing investigation.

Both of the victims were able to get away unharmed.
