South Blvd reopens after water main break in South End

The road reopened around 4:30 a.m. Thursday after being closed almost 18 hours.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — All lanes of South Boulevard in South End are back open after crews were forced to close the road to repair a broken water main Wednesday afternoon. 

The City of Charlotte said the road was expected to be closed until 9 a.m. Thursday, but workers had traffic flowing again by 4:30 a.m. The southbound lanes of the road were closed between Clanton Road and New Bern Street around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

On the north side of town Wednesday afternoon, drivers were detoured around a gas leak on North Tryon Street near 23rd Street because. The location is near the Amtrak station.

A construction crew struck the gas line, according to the Charlotte Fire Department. Piedmont Natural Gas worked to repair the damage.

Two nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution, according to fire officials. No injuries were reported.

During the Wednesday evening commute, Interstate 85 was closed in northeast Charlotte due to police activity. Additionally, Interstate 77 southbound in Huntersville was closed due to a deadly crash.
