Strong storm system passes through parts of NC

There is a potential for strong to severe thunderstorms in parts of NBC Charlotte's viewing area Saturday night.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- As folks in the Charlotte area celebrated St. Patrick's Day, strong storms passed through parts of NBC Charlotte's viewing area late Saturday night.

A severe thunderstorm warning came and went for Burke, McDowell and Mitchell counties.

Avery, Ashe and Watauga counties were also issued severe thunderstorm watches before expiring at midnight.

NBC Charlotte's First Warn Storm Chief Meteorologist Brad Panovich said damaging winds and large hail were the primary concerns Saturday night.

Charlotte area will be under a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms from late Saturday night to around 1 a.m. Sunday, according to NWS. Winds are expected to be around 10 mph with new rainfall amounting to less than a tenth of an inch.

As for Sunday, the Queen City is expected to be mostly sunny with a high near 64 degrees with a 30 percent chance of showers later in the night.
