Suspect in CPCC groping cases charged with sexual assault near UNCC

CMPD charged 29-year-old David Kenney with felony sexual assault of a student walking on a path near the UNC Charlotte campus.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – There are major developments about the suspect in a series of sex crimes on two college campuses.

Late Monday afternoon, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department announced several new charges against 29-year-old David Kenney, including for a sexual assault near UNC Charlotte.

Police say it’s one of six crimes targeting women at UNC Charlotte and CPCC last week.

Police say the rape happened at around 11 p.m. on Friday, after several other sex crimes around campus.

David Kenney was previously charged in three cases of sexual battery near UNC Charlotte, which all happened on Friday night. He’s also accused of groping two women on the CPCC campus on Wednesday.

Now, Kenney is facing seven new charges, including rape and kidnapping.

Police also say they’re investigating whether he’s connected to two similar crimes near UNC Charlotte last month.

Investigators say they matched his DNA to the rape case on Friday. The female victim was walking away from campus when she was targeted.

“It’s opportunistic is really what it is, the offender is clearly escalating his behavior, he’s somebody we need to get locked up, and we did,” said Lieutenant Melanie Peacock of CMPD.

Kenney is also charged with a misdemeanor sex crime in Atlanta last month. CMPD says it’s waiting for more details on what that involved.

For now, Kenney remains in custody.
