Suspected gunman in York Co. shootout taken to SC detention center

The suspect accused of murdering a York County law enforcement officer and injuring three others in a deadly shooting has returned to South Carolina.

YORK COUNTY, S.C. -- The suspect accused of murdering a York County law enforcement officer and injuring three others in a deadly shooting has returned to South Carolina.

A judge denied bond for all charges against Christian McCall Friday evening. Prior to that, McCall was extradited back to York County after appearing before another judge in Mecklenburg County earlier in the day.

Later that Friday night, McCall was transported to the Spartanburg County Detention Center.

The wheelchair-bound, orange jumpsuit wearing 47-year-old was represented by North Carolina public defender Kevin Tulley.

Tulley explained to the judge that McCall was indigent and did not have the money to hire a private attorney to represent him during the extradition hearing.

“Despite the fact that he has worked at one of banks downtown for 20 years, he’s received a termination letter, income has stopped,” Tulley said.

“He was in the process of buying a home but that was in foreclosure proceedings. One of his cars has been reprocessed,” Tulley added.

Tulley also told the judge McCall was a U.S. Army Veteran who was honorably discharged after serving eight years.

Besides McCall’s attorney, sitting a stone’s throw away from him in the courtroom was York County Sheriff Kevin Tolson.

This is the first time Tolson had faced McCall since he was accused of murdering one his deputies. We asked the Sheriff if it was difficult to see McCall.

“As to be expected, not pleasant, not unpleasant,” Sheriff Tolson said.

The Sheriff went on to say he was “trying to stay as clinical as possible about moving forward.”

McCall is accused of using a high-powered weapon to shoot Detective Mike Doty, Sergeant Randy Clinton, Sergeant Buddy Brown and Officer Kyle Cummings.

The four law enforcement officers responded to a call of a domestic dispute at McCall’s home back on January 15.

Investigators say when officers arrived, McCall left the home and became the target of a six-hour manhunt.

McCall is accused of hiding in the woods and firing a volley of shots striking the four victims and a State Law Enforcement Division helicopter.

Deputy Mike Doty died two days after the attack. Sergeants Clinton, Brown and Officer Cummings continue to recover.

As McCall is back in South Carolina, he will officially be charged with one count of murder, three counts of attempted murder, domestic violence charges and weapons charges.

NBC Charlotte reporter Billie Jean Shaw dug through McCall’s past and learned this was not his first run-in with the law.

McCall was arrested for assaulting a police officer in 1994 in Florence County.

NBC Charlotte also learned McCall worked as a bank executive for Wells Fargo.
