Suspected gunman in York Co. shootout taken to SC detention center

The accused "cop killer" was transported out of the hospital and made his first appearance at his extradition and bond hearing on Friday.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The accused "cop killer" was transported out of the hospital and made his first appearance at his extradition and bond hearing on Friday.

Christian McCall, 48, was formally charged with the murder of York County deputy Det. Mike Doty and the attempted murder of three other deputies. McCall was denied bond and arrived in Spartanburg County Detention Center Friday night.

Earlier in the afternoon, York County Sheriff Kevin Tolson was a seeing-eye distance away from McCall in the Mecklenburg County courtroom. Friday marked the first time Tolson had faced McCall since he was accused of murdering one his deputies. NBC Charlotte asked the Sheriff if it was difficult to see McCall.

“As to be expected, not pleasant, not unpleasant,” Sheriff Tolson said.

McCall faces one count of murder, three counts of attempted murder, domestic violence charges and weapons charges.

South Carolina's 16th Judicial Circuit Solicitor Kevin Brackett said it's unclear when McCall's trial will begin.

"We plan to move forward as expeditiously as possible," Brackett said.

Brackett said he needs to speak to victims' families and read all the files before making a determination as to whether he will pursue the death penalty or not.
