CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. -- Concord Police are investigating a smash and grab after an SUV crashed into a Concord gun store.

Police were dispatched at 2:57 a.m. Friday to Eagles Gun and Range and found a Mercedes SUV driven intentionally into the front of the store.

The gun store manager says the robbers smashed in the front counter and stole around five handguns. The incident left an enormous hole in the front of the store. The front of the abandoned SUV was smashed in.

"It was a tragedy to get a phone call like that and they told me they did get into the store," said Michael Threadgill. "So I got here as quickly as I could."

Threadgill owns Eagle Guns and Range in Concord. Overnight a vehicle smashed into the side of the store, leaving an open hole. Guns were stolen from inside.

"Several of the semi-automatic handguns, 9mm, .40 caliber, but it could've been a lot worse," Threadgill said.

Similar scenarios of gun store break-ins took place on Tuesday at Ideal Sportsman on Highway 601, also in Concord, last week at the Cash America Pawn in west Charlotte, and in September at Repent Arms in Concord.

Threadgill says it's also not the first time crooks have tried to bust into his place.

"They tried to get in here a little over two weeks ago, tried to ram into the building same way, left the stolen vehicle here," Threadgill said. "But they didn't get through the building."

As they clean up at Eagle Guns, Threadgill's not sure what to make of the string of gun shop break-ins.

"People are going crazy," he said. "The world we're living in is a sick world and people, they'll take anything."

Police are still investigating each of these cases
