CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Plenty of kids decked out in costumes hit the streets Monday night, trick-or-treating and piling up the candy.

"Trick or Treat" was the phrase repeated over and over that led to a free-for-all of kids and candy at the end of the night.

Drivers waited as streets were flooded and kids in costumes even negotiated with their neighbors for more candy.

Dee Chinault sat outside with a crew of adults.

"Pass out the candy and look at all the wonderful costumes," Chinault said.

Kit Kats, Hershey's and Heath Bars.

"And my husband Dale ate all the peppermint patties," Chinault said. "And we've drank all the wine."

Hauling heavy bags can be a challenge. For the littlest vampires, it's a fight to the finish. But the hard-earned candy, when it's all said and done, just seems to taste better on Halloween night.
