Man charged with stealing SUV with toddler inside

A man was facing several charges Thursday night after police said he stole a car in north Charlotte with a child inside.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A man is facing several charges after police said he stole a car in north Charlotte with a child inside.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, the incident happened around 6:30 Thursday evening at the Super Wok Restaurant in the 2800 block of West Sugar Creek Road. Investigators said a woman left her 2-year-old son alone in her SUV while she went inside the restaurant to order food. She told police the vehicle was left running and no one was with the child.

When the woman came back outside, investigators said the vehicle had been stolen with the child still in it. The mom called 911 and some friends who found the SUV wrecked nearby.

Officers said the suspect, identified as 22-year-old Djerry Rosner Cassamajor, was seen walking away from the vehicle with the child left in the snow. Witnesses chased down Cassamajor and held him until officers arrived and took him into custody, according to police. He was charged with larceny of a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen vehicle, child abuse, kidnapping and the abduction of a child.

The toddler wasn't hurt, but the Department of Social Services was notified because the child had been left unattended. Police have not said if the mother will face charges related to the incident.
